Undip Global Classroom: Marginalized Gender and Sexuality in Correctional Settings

As part of the Undip Global Classroom initiative, the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Diponegoro welcomed Dr. Anna Schliehe, a researcher from the Research Group Cultural and Political Geography at the University of Trier, Germany, as a guest lecturer in the Marginal Psychology course. The online lecture was held via Zoom on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM (WIB).

In her presentation entitled “Gender and Sexuality within Marginalised and Institutionalised Contexts,” Dr. Schliehe explored issues related to women’s experiences within institutional settings, particularly women’s imprisonment in countries such as Norway, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Drawing on her research, she highlighted how power relations, social stigma, trauma, and gendered experiences shape the lives of women in correctional institutions. The lecture emphasized that imprisonment often leaves long-lasting psychological consequences, including trauma, difficulties in social reintegration, and challenges during post-release recovery.

The topic was closely connected to the learning objectives of the Marginal Psychology course, particularly in understanding how marginalization, social exclusion, stigma, social identity, power relations, and structural inequalities influence the psychological well-being of vulnerable and marginalized populations. By integrating perspectives from psychology, social geography, gender studies, and criminology, students gained a broader and more critical understanding of marginalized experiences within contemporary societies.

The session generated enthusiastic participation from students. One of the Master of Psychology students, Maylya Isnaeni, raised a question regarding the key factors that hinder women’s psychological recovery after imprisonment. This discussion led to further exploration of trauma-informed approaches, social support systems, and inclusive policies that facilitate successful reintegration into society.

Through the Undip Global Classroom program, the Faculty of Psychology continues to create meaningful opportunities for international collaboration and inclusive learning, preparing students to engage with complex social issues from both local and global perspectives.
